About

Saving dogs, and helping people.

History

PAWS was originally founded by a well respected trainer, Jean DeCesaris, CPDT, APDT who resided in NJ at the time, and whose inspiration came from working with local shelter dogs.  Her idea was to enrich the lives of children with special needs by educating them about animals, showing them how animals can help them lead fulfilling lives, and how the animals respond to the student’s friendship. Conversely, through companionship, handling and training provided by the students, the dogs become more relaxed, more comfortable with strangers, and more responsive to commands. Both students and animals gain self confidence and ultimately the dogs become more adoptable. This innovative shelter program is transforming the lives of children in the community, as well as the lives of the dogs that are lucky enough to spend time weekly with each other. As our program grows, we need more volunteers, more dogs, both in a shelter and alumnae dogs, and new shelters who would like to join us to involve their dogs and volunteers in this enriching program.
